How to Film Your Workouts at the Gym (and Fix Your Form)
You can't see your own form while you lift. A mirror shows you the front, but most form mistakes happen from the side: a rounded back on a deadlift, knees caving in on a squat, a half rep on a bench press.
Your phone fixes that. Film your sets, watch them back between sets, and you'll correct mistakes faster than with any number of cues.
Best camera angle for each lift
| Exercise | Camera position | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Squat | Side-on, about hip height, plus one from the front at 45° | Depth, back angle, knees tracking over toes |
| Deadlift | Side-on, about knee to hip height | Flat back, bar path close to the legs |
| Bench press | Side-on, at bench height, or from the head end | Bar path, elbow angle, full range |
| Overhead press | Side-on, about chest height | Bar path, lower back arch |
| Pull-ups / rows | Side-on or from behind | Full range, shoulder blades moving |
Tips for useful footage
- Get the whole body in frame, including the floor and the bar at its highest point.
- Keep the camera level and still. Shaky or tilted footage hides real mistakes.
- Use slow motion to check bar path and the bottom of each rep.
- Same angle every week, so you can compare progress fairly.
- Landscape for form checks, portrait for reels.

Gym etiquette
- Never film other members without asking. Point the camera so others stay out of frame.
- Check your gym's rules on filming before you start.
- Don't block walkways or equipment with your setup.
- Film quickly and move on, especially at busy times.
Film hands-free
Propping your phone on a water bottle or leaning it against a dumbbell rarely gives a steady, level shot, and it falls at the worst moment.
The SUNCHHAYA Dual Magnetic Mobile Holder for Gym sticks to any metal surface: racks, machines, dumbbell stands.
- Dual-sided magnets hold MagSafe iPhones directly, and other phones with the included magnetic ring.
- Attach it at any height on a squat rack for perfect side-on angles.
- Works at home too: on the fridge for recipe videos, on a metal shelf, or as a car mount.
FAQ
Will the magnet harm my phone?
MagSafe-style magnets are designed for phones. Keep any magnet away from bank cards and hotel key cards.
Does it work on painted machines?
Yes, as long as there's steel underneath. It won't stick to aluminium, plastic or chrome-plated plastic.
